Transportation services

Western Systems’ transportation systems can manage public transportation, material and passenger transportation and maintenance.

LASTI transportation system

LASTI is a versatile IT system specially designed for the transportation sector. LASTI handles journey planning, invoicing, accounting and reporting. The system includes applications for managing materials haulage, goods freightage, waste transportation and other activities related to materials trading. The journey coordinator application maintains the order book, plans journeys and passes electronic orders to vehicles and machinery. Orders are supplemented with process data to generate despatch lists and waybills for invoicing and accounting.

Smartcard applications

A growing number of Finns use a smartcard. Public sector payment systems are increasingly switching to the use of a smartcard as a means of payment. The card can be used to pay for a number of services provided by the public sector – such as transport, swimming pools, health centres and libraries. It is faster, more convenient and safer paying by card than with other means of payment. The cardholder simply buys travel entitlements and funds for his/her personal card. Credit can be stored in the card via the Internet – conveniently, even while at home.

WesternROUTE

The travelcards used by public transport passengers in the Helsinki metropolitan area are based on Western System Oy’s WesternROUTE, which is perhaps the most widely known smartcard application.

The WesternROUTE application collects, processes and generates statistics about payments, account entries and travel events on local and regional transport networks. WesternROUTE handles the invoicing, account transfers and central clearing between transport service providers, and also generates reports on individual transport providers and depot activities. In addition to Helsinki, the cities of Turku, in Finland, and Uppsala, in Sweden, have also chosen WesternROUTE as the IT system for managing their transport networks.

The latest inroad for WesternROUTE is in Northern Norway, where it is deployed as a road toll and ferry payment system. Western’s application expertise has played a central role in this project, which is very demanding – both technically and administratively – because so many interest groups are involved.
